The take-home coding challenge is one of the most misunderstood parts of the tech hiring process. Candidates either under-invest — treating it like a quick homework problem — or massively over-invest, spending thirty-plus hours building a production-grade system for a role they might not even want. Both approaches hurt your chances.

Why Companies Use Take-Home Assignments

Take-home challenges emerged as an alternative to synchronous whiteboard interviews, which many companies recognised as poor predictors of actual job performance. The theory is that working on a problem at your own pace, with access to your normal tools and environment, more closely resembles actual day-to-day engineering work than solving algorithmic puzzles in front of a stranger under artificial time pressure.

The real reasons vary by company

Some companies use take-homes because they genuinely believe they produce better signal than live coding screens. Others use them as a passive filter — they know that a fraction of candidates will not bother completing the assignment, which reduces interview load without the company having to make an active decision. Still others use them as a quick first-pass screen before investing in phone or video interview time.

Understanding which situation you are in changes your approach. A take-home from a company that states "we use this instead of a whiteboard round" warrants more effort than a quick screening exercise before multiple subsequent stages.

Is it ever appropriate to decline?

Yes — and you should feel comfortable doing so. If an assignment appears to require more than four to six hours of work for a junior role, or more than six to eight hours for a mid-level role, it is reasonable to ask for clarification about the expected time investment, or to decline if the scope is genuinely unreasonable. Legitimate companies understand that candidates are often running multiple processes simultaneously. A company that insists on a thirty-hour take-home is telling you something about how they value your time, which is information you should factor into your decision.

What They Are Actually Evaluating

Most candidates assume the primary evaluation criterion is whether their code works correctly. In reality, reviewers typically weight several factors — and correctness is only one of them.

What technical reviewers look for

  • Problem understanding: Did you correctly identify what was being asked? Technically elegant code that solves the wrong problem is an immediate failure.
  • Code organisation and readability: Can a stranger read this code and understand it in six months? Good naming, clear structure, and comments where logic is genuinely non-obvious.
  • Judgment about trade-offs: Did you make sensible choices about what to build fully, what to stub out, and what to explicitly leave out? Senior engineers are evaluated on judgment, not feature count.
  • Testing: Did you write tests? What kind? A complete test suite is impressive; a few well-chosen tests covering the core behaviour and important edge cases is the realistic minimum. Zero tests is a red flag at most companies.
  • Communication: Is it clear what you built, why you made the choices you made, and what you would do next with more time? This is primarily evaluated through your README.

What they are not evaluating

Reviewers are rarely judging the visual polish of your UI unless design is a specific stated requirement. They are not rewarding you for implementing features beyond the brief. They are not impressed by the volume of dependencies you pulled in. The instinct to "add more" is almost always counterproductive — a tightly-scoped, well-executed solution beats a sprawling one that is partially broken.

How to Read the Brief and Avoid Scope Creep

Scope creep is the number one cause of candidates spending ten or twenty hours on a take-home that was designed to take three. It almost always starts with a sentence in the brief that is interpreted more broadly than intended.

Read the brief twice before writing a single line of code

On the first read, get the overall picture. On the second read, identify every concrete requirement versus every suggestion or example. "The app should allow users to search for products" is a requirement. "For example, you might add filters by category or price range" is a suggestion — it is optional and often a scope trap.

Identify the minimum viable deliverable before you open your editor

Write a one-paragraph description of what you are going to build that satisfies every explicit requirement in the brief and nothing beyond it. If you catch yourself including something that was not explicitly required, ask whether it is truly necessary to demonstrate the skill being assessed. Usually it is not.

Clarifying questions — ask them early

Most companies include a recruiter or hiring manager contact in the take-home instructions. Use them. Sending two or three specific clarifying questions within the first few hours of receiving the brief is professional and shows good communication instincts. Do not ask questions clearly answered in the brief. Do ask about genuine ambiguities in the requirements, preferred tech stack if not specified, and expected UI polish if the brief is vague on that front.

Time-Boxing Strategy

Time-boxing — committing to a fixed budget and working backwards from it — is the most important practical skill for take-home challenges. Here is a framework for a typical three-to-four-hour assignment.

Phase 1: Setup and planning (30 minutes)

Read the brief thoroughly. Identify requirements versus suggestions. Initialise your project structure, version control, and any boilerplate. Resist the urge to immediately start building features — the thirty minutes you spend here will save you from wasted hours later.

Phase 2: Core implementation (2 hours)

Build only the features that directly satisfy the explicit requirements. Write the happy path first, then handle the error cases most likely to be tested. Commit frequently with clear, descriptive messages — reviewers look at your git history and it is part of the evaluation.

Phase 3: Tests and cleanup (45 minutes)

Write tests for the core behaviour and at least one or two important edge cases. Remove debug logs, commented-out code, and console statements added during development. Review your code for obvious style inconsistencies.

Phase 4: README and final review (30 minutes)

Write a thorough README. Do a final read-through of your code from the perspective of someone seeing it for the first time. Confirm everything runs cleanly from a fresh clone of your repository before you submit.

A smaller, cleaner solution signals better engineering judgment

An engineer who delivers two features with clean code, good test coverage, and thoughtful error handling demonstrates more seniority than one who delivers five features with inconsistent naming, no tests, and unhandled edge cases. Feature count is a junior instinct. Quality and judgment are senior instincts. Experienced reviewers know the difference immediately.

Broken features are worse than absent features

A feature that crashes under basic usage actively harms your submission. It suggests either that you did not test it or that you did not have time to notice — neither is a good look. If you cannot complete a feature fully within budget, either omit it and note it in the README, or implement a minimal but fully working version with a clear comment about what a more complete implementation would include.

Strategic use of comments

Comments that explain non-obvious decisions — "Using a Map here instead of a plain object to guarantee insertion-order iteration across all JS environments" — are useful and signal thoughtfulness. Comments that restate what the code obviously does are noise. Leave breadcrumbs for your design reasoning, not annotations for every line.

How to Write a README That Sells Your Solution

Your README is your cover letter for the submission. It is the first thing a reviewer reads and it frames everything that follows. A strong README can compensate for minor implementation gaps. A weak or absent README undermines even excellent code.

Here is a practical README template you can adapt for any take-home submission:

Common Mistakes

These are the patterns that consistently cause technically capable candidates to fail take-home reviews.

Solving a different problem than the one asked

This happens when candidates misread the brief or assume they know what the company "really" wants. Always solve the stated problem first. If you want to demonstrate additional thinking, do it in the README's "what I would do next" section — not by changing the scope of what you actually built.

A single commit or no git history

Reviewers look at your commit history. A single commit containing all the code means they cannot see your development process, which makes it harder to assess how you approach problems incrementally. Commit at logical checkpoints with clear messages throughout your work. This also demonstrates the professional version control habits you would bring to their codebase every day.

Dependencies that are overkill for the scope

Reaching for a full ORM, an event bus, a Redis cache, or a complex state management library for a three-hour take-home signals poor judgment about tooling complexity relative to problem scale. Use the simplest tool that satisfies the requirement. If the requirement warranted more complexity, the brief would reflect that.

Hardcoded secrets

API keys, passwords, and connection strings hardcoded in source files are an immediate disqualifier at security-conscious companies and a serious negative signal everywhere else. Use environment variables, provide a .env.example file with variable names but no real values, and add .env to your .gitignore. Do this as a reflex, even when the stakes seem low — it is a habit, and habits are part of what reviewers are assessing.

Not doing a clean run before submitting

The most common technical failure in take-home submissions is code that works on the candidate's machine but not for the reviewer. Before submitting, clone your repository into a fresh directory, follow your own README instructions exactly, and verify everything works end-to-end. This five-minute check prevents the most avoidable form of failure.

The timeline after submitting a take-home varies enormously by company size and hiring volume. Here is what the process typically looks like and how to navigate it well.

Typical review timelines

Most companies review take-home submissions within three to seven business days. Some — especially larger companies or those with high application volume — can take two to three weeks. If you have not heard back within the timeframe they communicated, or within seven business days if no timeline was given, a single brief follow-up email to your recruiter contact is appropriate and professional. Keep it short: confirm the submission was received, ask if there is any additional information you can provide, and restate your continued interest.

The code review interview

Many companies follow up a take-home with a code review session — a structured interview where they walk through your submission with you. This is not a trap. It is an opportunity to explain your reasoning, discuss the trade-offs you made, and demonstrate the thinking behind your choices under light pressure. Come prepared to answer: "Why did you structure it this way?", "What would you change with another hour?", and "How would you scale this to handle ten times the load?"

This is where a well-written README pays dividends. If you documented your design decisions clearly, you have already rehearsed your answers in writing. If you did not, you will be reconstructing your reasoning under interview pressure, which is significantly harder and less coherent.

If you do not pass

Rejection after a take-home is discouraging, particularly when you invested significant time.
